# AI hallucination

A fluent but unsupported or incorrect output produced by an AI system.

A hallucination is a quality and risk event, not a strange writing style. A safe workflow assumes generated text can be wrong. Require source checking, cite authorities from the firm library, compare key names and dates, and route legal conclusions to a lawyer. The ABA Formal Opinion 512 explains that generative AI can produce plausible outputs without a factual basis. A workflow audit should identify where a hallucination could reach a client or court, then add a stop and review step.
